Frequently Asked Questions

Programs

  • A play-based preschool education focuses on learning through hands-on, interactive activities that engage children’s natural curiosity. At GJK, children explore concepts like problem-solving, creativity, and social skills through play, art, music, and outdoor activities. This approach fosters a love of learning, encourages independence, and builds essential skills that set the foundation for future academic success.

  • At GJK, we believe early childhood education should be joyful, engaging, and rooted in community. Our play-based curriculum nurtures curiosity, creativity, and a love of learning, while small class sizes and experienced educators provide individualized attention. We prioritize social-emotional growth, hands-on exploration, and a warm, welcoming environment where families feel connected and supported. With a strong tradition of excellence and a focus on kindergarten readiness, GJK provides a nurturing foundation for lifelong success.

  • From day one, routines are established to help children feel secure and confident. Teachers model and guide students in self-help skills such as putting belongings away, washing hands at the start of the day, and gathering items at dismissal. As the year progresses, children gain independence in these tasks. While daily schedules vary by classroom, every day includes choice time with intentional learning centers, circle time for songs, games, and stories, snack, and large motor play.

  • Yes! Each class follows a consistent routine, as young children thrive on structure and clear expectations. While special guests or events may occasionally add variety, the core daily schedule remains steady to provide a sense of security and predictability for the children.

  • No, potty training is not required. As a child-led, play-based preschool, we support each child’s individual development. Our teachers encourage independence and readiness, working closely with families to meet each child’s needs.

  • Kindergarten readiness is a key focus of our 4s Junior Kindergarten program. To provide personalized support, children work in small groups of 3–4 with a dedicated teacher in a separate classroom. These sessions focus on phonics, early reading, math concepts, and other foundational skills, ensuring each child receives individualized attention to build confidence and prepare for a successful transition to kindergarten.

  • We work closely with parents and our catering company to accommodate any allergies or medical needs. Parents provide a doctor’s form with instructions, which is posted in the classroom and kept in a backpack that travels with the class for easy access in case of an emergency.

  • Birthdays are recognized in each class, and parents are invited to join the celebration. Depending on the age group, celebrations may include a special book, singing, or a popsicle treat. Families are also welcomed into the classroom for winter holiday festivities, end-of-year picnics, and opportunities to read or participate in special projects throughout the year.

  • Enrichment classes at GJK provide children with opportunities to explore specialized subjects such as early math, yoga, STEM, and art in a fun and engaging way. These classes foster creativity, problem-solving, and new interests while also offering families the option to extend their child’s school day.

  • In addition to tuition, fees include snack, lunch, general classroom fund, and optional vision and hearing screenings for 3s and 4s students.

Community

  • At the start of each school year, new families are paired with a member of our parent-led Executive Board. Host families offer support, answer questions, and help new families feel welcomed and connected within the GJK community.

  • Your involvement is a vital part of our program. Opportunities include becoming a room parent, volunteering for classroom activities or events, joining our parent-led Executive Board, joining our Winter Benefit Committee, or hosting a fundraising party.

  • We offer many ways for parents to be active participants in the classroom. Opportunities vary by class and range from being a mystery reader, leading a fun activity, or making play dough.

  • Absolutely! At GJK, we love bringing families together. Our events include the Back-to-School Picnic, Parents' Night Out, the Annual Winter Benefit, and VIP Day—just a few ways we create fun and lasting memories as a community.

  • Host Parties are fundraisers planned and sponsored by a family or group of families to benefit GJK. The hosts cover the cost of the event, and guests purchase tickets, with all proceeds going directly to the school. Host Parties can be designed for adults, children, or families and vary in theme, size, and ticket price.

For example, each year, the 4s have a Halloween Class Host Party, where two families sponsor the event, and teachers donate their time. Another example is a group of parents hosting a cocktail party at their home, covering all expenses while guests purchase tickets to attend. Reach out to our Fundraising VP to get involved.
